Freedom Day – Nov 1, 2008

I’ve been working in my full time job now for just over 5 years. I’m a mechanical engineer by trade. Over the past year I knew I wanted to quit and explore other streams of income, but I was scared.

In June I finally got the courage to hand in my resignation. Now I didn’t know how this was all going to turn out, so I figured that I would just hand in my letter of resignation and that would be that. In the meantime I would have to figure out a way to put food on the table.

While I was speaking with the president of the company I work for, he was very supportive of my new business ideas. He thought it was great. He also said that he would help me out and provide me with a part time contract position while I got my business up and running. I was floored when I heard this.

Full Time to Part Time

I’ve made arrangements to work 2 days a week as a consultant. My new hourly rate is going to be 3 times the rate I’m currently paid as a salary employee. Granted, this new hourly rate will not include benefits, a pension plan, vacation days, or any of the other fun things that come with a job, and I’m ok with that.

My first day of Freedom will be November 1, 2008. Now I can put food on the table and still build my blog and coaching business, Freedom Education.

All in all, I’m very grateful for the President’s generosity and support. I’m very appreciative of how this all came to be. I’m also very touched that others were willing to help me realize my dream. I guess I just had to let it happen.

Bob Proctor’s Thoughts on Freedom

It was in June of this year when I was sitting in one of Bob’s seminars on money. He started to talk about people who work in a job. He was saying that a lot of people work in a job they hate. They don’t want to be there.

I started to sweat. I was sweating because I knew he was right. I was one of those people. Two weeks after that seminar I handed in my resignation.

Earlier this week I was at another Bob Proctor seminar. I had another quick chat with Bob.

I told him that I made the decision to quit my job. I came to this decision at his seminar. I told him that I made arrangements to Consultant 2 days per week at my new rate. He asked me how I felt, and I said, “I feel great.” He said, “Yeah, that’s freedom.” Then he paused and said,

“You’re still in a box. You’re just in a bigger box. I’m in a box too. We always are. The box will keep getting larger as long as we do.”

I started to see his point. Our entire lives are based on the process of growth and evolution.  We’re continually expanding and growing.  As long as we’re growing we will continue to expand and face new challenges.

I guess that’s the price for freedom :)
