How to Become Aware of False Beliefs

Awareness of your current beliefs is an important first step to change them. If you can’t see them, you can’t change them. Once you’re aware of what’s holding you back, anything is possible. In this article I’ll review a process that I’ve found useful to uncover counter intentions and false beliefs.

Let me explain why awareness is so important. Let’s say you’ve just bought a new shirt. The shirt is brand spanking new so it feels and looks awesome. You walk around with a lot of pride because you’re excited to show off your new shirt. Everything is great and then someone says to you, “Did you realize that you still have the sticker price on the back of your shirt?” At first, you feel offended and even embarrassed because you didn’t realize this. Then after your emotions settle you laugh it off and realize it’s the best thing that could have happened to you. You’re now aware and can peel off that silly looking sticker.

“The first step towards change is awareness.” ~ Nathaniel Branden

A lot of us these days are walking around with sticker prices on the back of our shirts and we don’t even realize it! These stickers are the same as those false beliefs that we were taught. The same hidden beliefs that hold us back from having an amazing relationship, a fulfilling career and generating an increased cash flow or income.

Awareness is important. If you had a big booger on the side of your nose, would you want to know about it? You bet you would! Increasing awareness let’s you see yourself as others see you. You get to see yourself in a new light and from a different perspective.

Becoming aware will help you uncover your false beliefs. False beliefs are thoughts that don’t serve you. These can come in many forms. They can be visual, auditory, kinesthetic <feeling type> or a combination of all of the above.

How to Become Aware of False Beliefs

When looking at your beliefs, you will want to look for beliefs that would stop you in a specific area. Maybe you have had a goal to loose weight, develop new relationships, become a public speaker or want to earn a million dollars. Whatever your goal is, look for an area in your life where you have been limited and would like to see a change.

Once you’ve got an area you want to focus on, honestly ask yourself this question,

“What are my beliefs about this goal?”

Take some time to really answer this question and write down your answers. It may be the most valuable exercise that you do for yourself. If you want to earn a million dollars then honestly ask yourself what you think and believe about having a million dollars. Does it scare you? Does it get you excited? Pay attention to the visual, kinesthetic and auditory responses you get and write them down.

Remember, if you can’t see it, you can’t change it. Increase your awareness by recording all your answers to this question.

Once you have a list of beliefs about this goal, look at them and break them into two categories. Decide which ones are empowering and which ones are false or limiting. The false beliefs are the ones that don’t support you. They may cause some resistance when it’s time to take action. These are the beliefs that will take you out of the game by giving you reasons or excuses to not take action. These same beliefs are the ones that you want to bring into your awareness by writing them down.

Attracting is a Clue

If you’re not aware of your current beliefs then you could be attracting the very thing you don’t want! This is a clue. If you tend to surround yourself and attract people that you don’t trust, what does this mean about you? If you tend to surround yourself and attract people who are always broke and out of cash, what does this mean about you? This is what I call a clue.

Remember like attracts like. Your beliefs are so powerful that they will consistently over power your conscious thoughts. Pay attention to the people, circumstances and situations that you attract into your life. Do this and you’ll be one step closer to uncovering your false beliefs.

Once you’re clear of your false beliefs you can then start to act from new beliefs: Praxis and Taking Action

Yes, I totally agree. I’ve put a lot of focus on the ‘taking action’ in this series in the hopes of getting my message across clearly to everyone.

Although taking action is not always necessary, I believe building the habit of taking action during bursts of inspiration is key. It’s how I’ve created these more recent articles. Any other thoughts on your end?
