Will Vision Help You Escape the Rat Race?

This article is the sixth in a series of articles on How to Triple Your Income as a Consultant.

You’ve got to have a clear picture of where you’re going. If you don’t, it’s like having a ship without a rudder. Who are you helping and why?  How many hours are you working and what are you doing?  What sort of lifestyle have you created? What sort of luxuries can you afford?  All of this must be mapped out in your head from the very beginning.

Escape the Rat Race

You might not be in the career you want right now.  You may be in a job or business that you don’t really enjoy like I was.

The way to get out of your current career and into a new one is to start picturing yourself in your new career and living the lifestyle you really want.  You can start right now by checking out: Creative Visualization Insight #1.

You see, I started this process in early 2008.  Every morning I got up at 5:30 am and held the image of the business and lifestyle I wanted in my minds eye.  I held this image in my mind and visualized being in the new business and lifestyle everyday for five minutes a day.

“When you create the picture in your mind of how you will live when you reach your income objective, understand that the creative process has begun.  It is only a matter of time before your new lifestyle becomes a physical reality.” ~ Bob Proctor

Then I began to act with faith and purpose at the job I was working in.  I took effective action where I was and gave it everything I had.

In the beginning my actions were quite the same, but as I began to think and act in a certain way I outgrew my environment.  I started to take new actions and by virtue of the laws, I evolved into a new environment.

“When an organism has more life than can be expressed in the functions of its own plane, it develops the organs of a higher plane, and a new species is originated.” ~ Wallace Wattles from The Science of Getting Rich

It was at this point that I got into consulting.  I was a consultant for a short period of time, then I completely left engineering to pursue my passion coaching.

Escape the Rat Race One Step at a Time

Now I’ll be the first to admit that consulting was not my primary objective.  When I started visualizing in early 2008, consulting was not part of the plan.  It just happened to be the most natural next step for me to take towards my desired outcome: coaching and blogging.

You see, all you need to know is your desired outcome.  Keep the end in mind.  Let’s call the end result “C” and your current position “A”

Create Your Vision

As you begin to visualize and take effective action, opportunities (B) will begin to appear to you.  It’s these opportunities that will help you move towards your desired outcome.

Opportunities

That’s exactly what happened when I was offered the consulting position.  It was not my primary objective, but I knew deep down that it would move me towards my desired outcome.

When I started this process I had no idea how I was going to leave my full time job.  I couldn’t see all the steps I was going to take and I can tell you now that it doesn’t matter.  You don’t need to know how you’ll reach your outcome.  You just need to start with your vision, cultivate a desire for that vision and take effective action.  The “how” will show up.

8 Ways to Cultivate a Powerful Vision

A powerful vision sets your desire into motion.  Desire fuels your actions.  Here are some ideas on how to cultivate a powerful vision:

  • Set aside at least five minutes of every day to create your vision.
  • Make sure you’re in a quite place where you won’t get distracted.
  • Be consistent and visualize every day.
  • Master your attention.  Be sure to remain present and consciously aware of your thoughts when visualizing.
  • Associate with your vision.  Make sure it’s through your own eyes:  Should You Visualize in the 1st or 3rd Person?
  • Include all aspects of your life: career, financial, family, friends, hobbies, passions, pleasures, vacations, homes, cars, or whatever else your heart desires.
  • Make it fun!  As you build the habit, visualizing will become a lot more fun and you’ll even look forward to your creative time.

Remember that none of this works until you decide to make a commitment.  A commitment for a better life and a better way of living.  Getting into consulting is a great way to transition into your own business, but you’ve got to decide to go out and do it.
