Life Directions Intensive Review

This is a review of T. Harv Eker’s Life Directions Intensive which I attended in January 2008.  I registered for this course back in the summer of 2007 because I was unhappy in my job and wanted to move my career into an entirely new direction.

Life Directions Intensive

Life Directions Intensive

One of the most valuable insights I got from this course was with the one-on-one work that I did, not just with other participants, but with some of the coaching staff.

Peak Potentials has over delivered on every course I’ve ever attended with them.  In the Life Directions Intensive they took it up a notch and did something truly unique.

At the very beginning of the course a group of 30 coaches walked up on stage and introduced themselves one by one. At first I wasn’t sure what to make of it, but then realized what was happening.

Harv had enlisted over 30 professional life coaches from all over North America to volunteer at his 3 Day Life Directions Intensive. Basically, these coaches were there for anyone who wanted coaching during the course. These coaches were a resource to help us through any area of our life – at no additional cost.

There were at least 30 different coaches – from life coaches, wellness coaches and business coaches to more specialized coaches.  Anyone who was open to coaching that weekend would have been at a great advantage because they would have had their own personal coach at their disposal for the entire three days.

4 Step Life Purpose Statement

During this course you’ll also gain clarity on your mission statement.  I refer to this as your life purpose statement.  A statement that is at the fore front of everything you want to be, do or have.  Your life purpose statement doesn’t change with time as your goals do – a life purpose statement is the same throughout your entire life.

Napoleon Hill and Andrew Carnegie taught what they believed to be two of the most important principles to become a massive success.  One of those principles was to have a major definite purpose.  Knowing your life purpose gives meaning to everything that you do so that you can live a purpose-driven life.

There are many ways to define your life purpose statement.  I learned this method from the trainers at Peak Potentials when I attended the Life Directions Intensive.

Here is the 4-step approach that you’ll learn:

Step 1: Your purpose is an action.  It’s something you DO.  Write down 5 verbs or action words that resonate with you (advance, coach, communicate, create, educate, empower, etc.)

Step 2: Who do you serve or assist?  Some examples include: others, teens, doctors, engineers, realtors, etc.

Step 3: What is the intention or benefit of your action?  Some examples include: inspire, educate, create wellness, live in harmony, etc.

Step 4: Bring all 3 together into a written statement.  For example, my life purpose statement is:

“…to teach and inspire others to love and live life by following their hearts desires.”

Do You Have a Life Purpose Statement?

It’s been my experience that most people don’t take time for themselves to really discover their true calling. They end up working in a job or business that they truly hate – just like I did, only to realize that 20 or even 30 years later they’re still not happy because they’re not doing what they really love to do.

I remember when I used to work as an engineer and I would work all week like everyone else did.  At the end of the week I would play hockey on Friday nights and I would be completely exhausted; I was just out of breath.  I couldn’t keep up and I felt so tired.

When I told my friends and family about this, they would say, “You’re getting old.  You’re not young anymore you know.”

Old, you gotta be nuts. At the time I was only 29 years old.  How old can you get at 29?

I feel more vital and alive today (32) than I did when I was 29 years old.  The real reason I was so exhausted at the end of the week is because I spent so much time doing something that I wasn’t aligned with. I was really struggling to get up and be enthusiastic about my job.

Around the same time one of my neighbors got sick. It was a Monday and we started talking. He said, “I’m not doing so good – so I took the day off,” and I said to him, “It must be your job. I hear working makes people sick – especially when you’re working at something you don’t really want to be doing.”

There are more unhappy people today than there were last year.

Did you ever wonder why?

It’s because you can’t be happy in a job that you don’t want to be in. It just doesn’t work.

One of the great insights I took a way from this course is that having a life purpose statement is about doing what you really love and want to do for others. It’s about helping others and yourself at the same time by looking at your life as a contribution to the world.

What I didn’t Like About Life Directions

The days are long. The training on some days can last up to 12 hours. By the end of the day you’re pretty bushed.

Generally speaking it takes some people much longer to “let go” of their ego and get on with what is really important. Some students are really attached to their identity. The more attached you are to your identity the longer it seems to take to let go and discover your true calling. I think this is the main reason why the training days are so long. Some people would rather be right than be happy.

It’s pretty remarkable to see someone find their “true-calling.” They almost seem to be in shock to discover something that they sort of new all along. The real transformation occurs when one participant “gets it” and then shares what they got with the rest of the group. That’s when more and more people start to “pop” and get it too. This is where you start to see some massive breakthroughs.

This course has had a huge impact on my life. I mean I probably wouldn’t be sitting here typing this right now if I hadn’t attended this training. I give it my highest recommendation.

Benefits of Attending Life Directions

Here are a few other benefits of the Life Directions Intensive:

  • Accountability is higher with groups so you’ll take bigger action and see bigger results in a very short period of time.
  • Opportunity to build your network and grow your community with like-minded people.
  • Gain insight, wisdom and knowledge from partners and group work.
  • Have an impact on others; if you’re even remotely interested in coaching you’ll get ample opportunity to coach others because a lot of the participants are looking for answers.
  • Group events have a special dynamic that make them a lot more fun.

Is Life Directions Intensive for You?

The Life Directions Intensive is for someone who:

  • wants to know their “true-calling” and why they’re really here
  • wants to take their life in a new direction without really knowing what to do
  • wants to find a business or career that is uniquely fit for them
