If you don’t believe in the Law of Attraction, does it still work?

It seems that there are two different trains of thought on this topic. You either believe in the Law of Attraction or you don’t. And if you don’t believe it, does it still work?

The reason this is an important question is because all of reality is created by your thoughts – and even more so, your dominant thought patterns and beliefs.  It’s these beliefs that create your ongoing physical manifestations.

So the big question then becomes, if you don’t believe in the Law of Attraction, does it still work?

I posted this question to a group of professional life and business coaches in a Group Discussion on Linkedin.  I thought you might be interested in what these coaches had to say.  Here are the top 9 answers (in no particular order):

It certainly seems to be so. A mind is a powerful thing. Whatever we think about expands. What’s going on inside our head is reflected in some way by tangible reality. Whether someone believes in the “law of attraction” or not, it makes sense that we’ll have a better quality of life if our minds are trained on ideas and things that support us.

In my experience working with many clients, Law of Attraction works but not always does it get what people “consciously” want. If there is an in-congruence between what their head wants and their unconscious, the unconscious always wins. So, as long as someone has a way to integrate the two, they can make the Law of Attraction work for them.

Great question!

To believe or to not believe is for me an informational black hole that prevents one from experimenting, understanding and moving on. Preferably moving on to a new level of understanding and being, from where one can enjoy a new degree of freedom.

Thinking about attractors as a set to which a dynamical system evolves after a long enough time, the Law of Attraction works if the system evolves in a direction that coincides with what one asks and believes and it does not work when what you ask and believe is not on your way.

Sometimes, there is a coincidence that makes you believe in the

Law of Attraction, or the co-incidence happens somewhere else and not on your path, and you don’t believe that the Law of Attraction works. What is always at work, is a complexity of systems that interact according to known and maybe also unknown laws.

From another perspective and a practical point of view, the secret behind The Secret is that the Law of Attraction only works if you can take appropriate action in one direction. The key is to know the right direction for you and to discern your own utmost possibilities. When you are negative and in the complaining-blaming-explaining mode, there is a high probability that the Universe will send you down the spiral. When you are positive and raise your level of attention, you get into an awareness mode that helps your intentions and actions to come from your being, not from your wanting. Then there is a greater chance that the Universe gives you what you want.

I believe in it completely yet as a coach I have worked with clients who don’t believe in it. They can not escape the clear connection between the condition of their lives and their attitudes, emotions and language yet still choose to dismiss LOA. One reflects the other. So, does it still work? Yes.

Here’s the simplest answer there is … it all depends on what you believe, since beliefs create your reality.

If you don’t believe that, then you will see evidence that beliefs don’t create your reality, thereby validating that beliefs create your reality!

The key element that very few people who discuss the Law of Attraction address, is that since the construct of the physical universe we are in, is dual in nature, the Law of Attraction works for what is limiting as well as what is empowering.

Yes, I believe it does! Whether you believe a magnet works or not, it still attracts metal. And whether you believe the energy you emit attracts more of the same energy or not, it still happens.

I can think of many people who send out negative energy and are always complaining about how everything bad that can happen to them does. They don’t believe in the Law of Attraction yet they seem to be living proof.

As for positive people, I can’t say I’ve met a positive person who wasn’t at least open to the idea that the Law of Attraction may exist. Guess it’s easier to believe you create your won joy and abundance than that you create your own challenges and scarcity!

The Law of attraction cannot fail to work – whether you believe in it or not – it is all based around the 7 laws that are in effect and working through energy vibration and you, those around you and the universe all the time.

You cannot change the way the laws work & you cannot stop them working – you can though, choose to work with them (believe in them and use your inner power to create your life) or ignore them (not believe in them and carry on doing what you have always done and keep getting what you have always got).

Law of attraction works with you all the time – it doesn’t know whether what you focus on is good for you, bad for you, what you really want or not – it simply knows what you are vibrating and focusing on.

The Law of Attraction is just that – a law. Or as someone famous once said “what we think about comes about”. Here’s an example. How many times have you thought about someone you haven’t seen in a while and then within a very short time, you bump into them, or the phone rings and guess who’s at the other end?

We attract more of what we think about and more of what we talk about. The more gratitude we express for the good things in our lives, the more of those good things come our way. In fact, gratitude for what we have is a fantastic way to get started with the law of attraction. Maybe you find it difficult to visualise, it can be a challenge at first. Then try this little exercise.

Each day, morning and night, think of at least three things that you are grateful for. They don’t need to be big things, they can be as simple as having a warm bed, a roof over your head and food to eat. As the days go by you will begin to look for things to be thankful for, to add to your list. That means you are being more thankful during the day as well as your set times morning and evening. If you keep a diary or journal, write them down. If you have an off day, you can always go back and look at your list.

You can see how this one little exercise begins to snowball. You will find more and more things to be thankful for. Gratitude begins to fill your life and leaves less room for other thoughts that are not so thankful. More good things come into your life as you concentrate on good things. This is the law of attraction at work.

These new thoughts of gratitude also begin to make us feel better. Research now shows that reading and thinking about good things has an effect on our brains and our physical well being.

Give the gratitude exercise a try and let me know what happens on your journey.

The Law of Attraction gets much coverage in the personal development and self help industry. I have been asked the question if you don’t believe in the law of attraction does it still work?

The question itself presupposes that a law of attraction exists and reminds me of the philosophical question:

If a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound if there is no one there to hear it?

Many people stumble upon the Law of Attraction because of financial hardships, ill health or loneliness. It can be sold as a panacea for those who need something when they are at a crisis in their lives.

Do you need to believe in something such as a law of attraction to have great relationships, attract business, have a better relationship with money or have a great life?

Do I need to believe in gravity or understand the theory for the coffee cup to fall to the floor if I drop it? No I don’t!

Sir Isaac Newton told us why an apple falls down from the sky and from that fact it’s very plain all other objects do the same: a brick, a bolt, a cup invariably fall down not up.

We tend to accept gravity and don’t fight against it. When was the last time you heard someone say dam gravity I could have floated to work today if gravity had not got in the way!

What do you think?  Do you need to believe in this creative force called the Law of Attraction in order for it to work?

You cannot break natural LAWs, like gravity, you only confirm them. The bigger question… is the Law of Attraction a natural law?

I cannot settle whether the Law of Attraction is a great truth. I do believe in the power of the mind, on both the conscious and subconscious level. I can clearly grasp that every man made object originated first in the mind or imagination, so our minds have a manifesting nature.

Our minds also have another quality and that is to search and look for answers to a phenomenon. We have a normal curiosity to answer “why” questions. The reason, this or that happens, is a question that we all want to be able to rationalize. This helps us gain an in depth understanding of ourselves.
I think a wonderful thing to accept is that life works! We can label it and explain it (life). However, in the end though we develop a real zest for answerability and that is what matters the most.

Yes the “Law of attraction” works automatically. In addition, it works so well that we are given an opportunity to explore our world and learn from mistakes. Life is our greatest teacher!

If you believe the Law of Attraction doesn’t work, this is a belief – which will play itself out in your life. What we think about, we attract. The Law of Attraction is always working. The question is, what are you attracting? What you want, or what you don’t want? It’s your choice.

“I cannot settle whether the Law of Attraction is a great truth.” I can relate to what Sandra writes.

I think there is way too much hype and implied promise out there that we can literally think about something and cause it to manifest. There is quite a bit more to it and if taken wrongly can cause someone to feel “completely responsible” for a car accident or some other random accident. Yes, our inattention could cause it but there are always contributing factors.

I think the Amish quote sums it up beautifully: “When you pray, move your feet” and Freud’s quote “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”
