Making Money is Like Exercising

It’s funny – but making money is like exercising. If you can exercise routinely then you probably have the mental fortitude and persistence to make money – and lot’s of it!

Have you ever set a goal to lose weight or look really hot for your next vacation?

Maybe not, BUT I know plenty of people who have. I see them at the gym at 6am most mornings. And it has been my experience that the same 11 people go to the gym at this time of the morning. These people are mentally strong and determined to reach their physical goals.

They are persistent. Someone who gets up at 6am routinely to pump iron has definitely made it a habit.

Are these people better or smarter than you or I?

NO! They just built the mental habit to routinely be to the gym for 6am.  IF they can do it, so can you!

It all starts with the right MENTAL ATTITUDE.

Maybe you’ve read about that before… people talking about being positive and having the right mindset… but most of these people either don’t know what the heck they are talking about or just plain keep all the secrets to themselves.

In my experience, someone who gets up at 6am to hit the gym consistently has the EXACT SAME mental attitude as someone who earns more money each and every day.  I believe that each of the 11 people I see at the gym could earn a million dollars (if that was their goal) because they are mentally strong.

Why would I say that?

Because their mental attitude has given them an empowering perspective to achieve and succeed:

  • they focus on rewards and their outcome (as opposed to obstacles and challenges)
  • they focus on how they will look and feel at the END of their workout
  • they are growth driven to lift more weight, gain greater endurance and increase performance
  • they have built the mental habit to take action consistently (notice I said “mental” habit)
  • they surround themselves with people that empower them (like other people at the gym, trainers, etc.)

Yeah, people have limiting beliefs – especially when it comes to losing weight and feeling great.  BUT so do a lot of people who want to earn more money.

To me, it’s the same.

Making Money is Like Exercising

The reason I say that is because it takes the right mental attitude and a strong desire to make money.   You’re not going to figure it out the first time through and you may stumble a few times.  It’s part of the learning process.

But to persist and succeed, you must have an empowering perspective to achieve…

  • you want to focus on how you will feel and look when you are successful and wealthy
  • you want to build the mental habit to take action consistently
  • you want to be growth driven to stretch your performance
  • you want to focus on the rewards and your outcome (and not the obstacles towards your goal)
  • you want to surround yourself with people who empower you (like growth driven colleagues, supportive friends, your own coach, etc.)

So it’s not that much of a science.  It’s more about building an intense desire to achieve.  Once you have that desire, the rest falls into place.

There are so many business owners out their looking for the next best business strategy or secret system to skyrocket their success and I say, “screw the systems.”

Find a way to do what you need to do to be successful and then make it a habit.  Your income and your success will soar.

    Hi Steve,

Just one question . You said “Find a way to do what you need to do to be successful and then make it a habit “. I have found out my way , which is I want to start a business in Engineering R & D . However , I am not a certified engineer but an English Literature graduate. Do you believe I can find a way without the required qualification.

    Best Regards,
    Ravi , Colombo (Sri Lanka)

    Ravi-

It doesn’t matter what Steve, Jim, Bob or anyone else believes. It only matters what you believe. So, the question then is, do you believe you can find a way without the qualification. Let the “I can” lead to the “how to”

    Dear Steve,

I was a great basketball player during my younger days and was highly motivated to workout & play basketball for my college. However, I could not derive enough motivation to get me to study , and so my grades suffered . Today I see the same thing happening with my 13 year old son . He is highly motivated when it comes to playing basketball or working in the gym , but is not motivated to study.

Is their any possibility that I can get my son motivated. I fear he too might meet the same fate as me .

I have been following your posts along with many other authors’ advice about following your passion. It is working! I love chess and puzzles. I left my full time math professorship. Now I teach chess to kids and just published a book of a set of new puzzles that I invented.
Your exercise analogy is right on. The 101 Mentagy puzzles were created using the methods you describe. Now I need to use this method for marketing. I’m on Facebook and have a website. I just haven’t figured out my next daily exercise. Any suggestions are welcome.

    I love the discussion here…

@ Ravi – more emphasis on what Ron said. He is dead on. Work on your belief…

@ Gordon – the thing that motivated you to play basketball is the exact same thing that ‘would have’ motivated you to study… having a desirable outcome…

…if your son is not motivated to study, he may be focusing on the obstacles in front of him instead of the outcome he wants to achieve… (MANY people do this)… it really depends on what he wants to achieve; that should be his focus…

…I mean if the thing he wants to achieve is desirable enough (to him) then he can achieve anything… but nobody can give him that desire – not even you!

@ Al… besides browsing the articles on my blog and acting on the advice I give in my Newsletters… I can’t really say; I don’t know your situation that intimately…

    Steve,

Thanks a lot . Will you please give me a clue as to how I should begin to change my belief . You are an expert and I am a novice .

    Best,

Thanks for your feedback. I went oldschool: library and book store research. Eventually purchased a book that provides concrete steps along with methods to measure their effectiveness. Now I have a blueprint for action. Will let you know how it works out. http://www.Mentagy.com

@ RAVI- I COULD’VE NOT SAID IT ANY BETTER, SOMETIMES PEOPLE FORGET THAT YES HAVING SOMEONE ELSE BELIEVE IN YOU IS GREAT AND CAN HELP YOU SOMEWHAT REACH YOUR GOAL, BUT IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF DOING- NOT WHAT “SOMEONE ELSE IS TELLING YOU ARE CAPABLE OF DOING” YOU WILL MOST DEFIANTLY REACH YOUR GOAL/ FULL POTENTIAL.
