Love Matters

I just got off the phone with a good friend of mine from University. His 3 year old daughter threw up all over him on Monday. She was sick. His daughter was all freaking out, but he was ok with it. It didn’t matter. No big deal.

When I was 16 I smashed my parents red Hyundai Elantra. Crashed right into a metal guard rail. My license was suspended and the car was a write-off.

I remember telling my dad the bad news. He approached the door in the middle of the night in his PJ’s, just nodded and said, “I’ll be right out.” He seemed pretty nonchalant about the whole episode.

Last summer I was at a friends cottage on the lake. It was the 3 of us – our new puppy (an 15 lb half pomeranian and half toy-poodle, so cute… ), my wife and I all squeezed into a single bed in my friends camper trailer. Our puppy was snuggled nicely between my armpit and the trailer wall.

At about 3am, I felt this warm feeling on my chest… got up and realized our puppy had thrown up all over my chest. I hung out my shirt to dry and went back to bed. “How cute,” I thought.

So what is my point?

Each one of these stories shares a common theme and the lesson is so simple.

If you love someone, your kids, your puppy or the work that you do… when it does throw up all over you – because eventually it will – it’s never a big deal or a blow-out drama. You can accept it for what it is.

That’s love. Love matters.

    Steve,

Perfect reminder that ‘loving’ is a verb and often only is revealed in times of ‘imperfection’.

I often forget about love and get angry.
